Rick Warren's Prayer at Inauguration
Andy Stanley leadership podcast
This was done from my iPhone so formatting is a little weird. Listen to the podcast here. (iTunes Store Link)
I encourage you to listen to the whole podcast but below are the notes I took if you don’t have time to listen to all of it.
Systems:
1 – have a system that allows you to hire the right person.
•have a well thought specific job description
•multiple interviews – 5 for regular jobs -10 for executive – cross department interviews.
•Test candidates – Taylor-Johnson test and right-path test – even though u may like the person this brings objectivity
2 – don’t give someone a seat at the table based on position.
•don’t try to remove people, instead add smart people.
3 – make complex with small teams – u can’t explain complicated information to large groups of people.
•Grew up with deacon meetings that 50-70 deacons. They weren’t meetings they were monologues! AMEN!
•how do u communicate that where they feel like they have ownership?
-decisions need to be made on the lowest level. WOW! He said the worst thing that could happen is to walk into someone’s office and say – there has been a meeting, you weren’t invited, we talked about you, we have made a change and it will affect you and your ministry permenantly. I’ve seen that a lot.
– is there anyway to involve the people that are going to be impacted? At least then when a decision is made the people impacted feel like they have had a choice and have had their opinions heard and have been represented fairly.
4 – Create an environment that encourages discussion and openess. Anyone can talk to anyone at anytime. Make sure that the lines of authority are open and decisions are made in those lines. However conversation is a totally different thing and that should be able to happen with anyone.
5 – Key Takeaway? – Systems create behaviours. Ask this question all the time. What are the behaviours I want to reinforce and which ones would I like to see go away? What systems are in place reinforcing either of those behaviours?
Christmas Video – Elevation Church
loved. loved! LOVED! this video from Wes Watson of a christmas promo called “Do You Hear Trailer”. Wes works at Elevation Church. I wish he had a direct link to that specific video because I think this link might disappear after Christmas but oh well. Enjoy it! Don’t necessarily dig the musical choice. But the design is … SCHWEET!
My Decision to go google
I have been a fan of google for along time. I’ve had a gmail account for as long as I can remember (back when you had to be invited) and gmail has always handled my personal domain email address. I love the fact that no matter how many times I move, change jobs, change internet providers, my email address will always be the same until the day I die (or email dies)
Recently I made the switch to stop using Mail as my email interface and start going to just using gmail. I gotta say at first I was kind of frustrated and tried other apps like thunderbird. I was also frustrated trying to get my exchange (work) accounts working in that workflow. However the more I started using it, the more I LOVED it. I could be on any computer anywhere and have my full featured mail client.
The more I did this the more I loved it and started using other features. I stopped using iCal and started using google calendar. I stopped using word (super slow and buggy on a mac anyways) and started using google docs. This really helped the situation I had with syncing my blackberry. I downloaded google apps for blackberry and had access to all these things now on my blackberry
Then I started putting more and more of my documents online using google docs or box.net or Evernote or dropbox. Then I started using delicious for all my bookmarks. Now no matter what computer I am on, I have access to them and now that I have an iPhone, I can access a lot of those items from my phone.
Now that I have resigned from my job at The MET (details coming soon about that) and have to turn in my computer, I am currently computerless. Sure I have that old powerbook G4 – but as soon as I did the updates to try to get functioning it has frozen. Hopefully I’ll be able to get it working soon. Anyways since I am computerless I am very grateful I made the decision to go google with most of my stuff.
Now if only I could sync my iPod, iPhone, iTunes, iPhoto and TV from any computer over the web. Then I’d be in business!
If you want to read a little more about this go here.
Hilarious Rick Warren Video
I was cleaning of my old external harddrive and found some videos of one of my trips to Saddleback a few years back for the PDYM Conference. I found this hilarious video they showed of Rick Warren. Hope you laugh as much as I did!
