Can't Sleep

It’s 2:00 am. I have to be at work at 8:30 and I can’t sleep.  I was exhausted at 10ish tonight. But now I can’t sleep. I guess I’m gonna try again. I wish I had my xbox here. Oh well.  Goodnight blogworld

Mark Batterson, Fellowship of the Woodlands, I2 Conference

I had the opportunity to go to Innovative Impact to hear Mark Batterson speak.  Andy and I went just to hear Mark. Andy got us in for free since he used to work there.  I got to meet Mark and he signed a book for me.

Here are the unedited notes I took.

  • Your legacy is not your church – it’s your family!
  • 2 Samuel 23:20-22
  • Dream God sized dreams – God is so much bigger than our wildest dreams
  • I don’t want to live my life to the best I can live my life. I want to live my life to the best that God can do through my life.
  • The best I can do is the best God can do
  • I don’t want things to happen in my life that I am capable of.
  • I want to do things that only God is capable of, then I can’t still any of the credit.
  • I pray for the favor of God.
  • I pray for the favor of God on my family, my church
  • I wish I could forget some of the Bible – we suffer from hindsight bias – we know how the stories end – we know when the men are walking around the walls of Jericho that the walls come tumbling down – imagine watching that story unfold not knowing the end – DRAMA – David and Goliath, Peter walking on water, etc
  • Action regret – doing something you wish you had not done – short term regret
  • Inaction regret – not doing something you should have done – long term regret
  • Therefore our biggest regrets at the end of our lives will be the lions we did not chase
  • What breaks our heart more as parents – r u happy when they don’t do something wrong or more happy when they do something great?
  • God has called us to play offense not defense
  • Stop being not doers –
  • I’m competitive – I don’t even like losing candyland to my kids
  • WOW – story of coaching kids on the side yelling we are on offense – wonder if Jesus is yelling at us… We’re on Offense
  • we are known more for what we are against than what we are for!
  • had a 533% growth in one week, the prior week was just his family because of huge blizzard
  • You do little things like they are big things
  • Coffeehouses are today’s modern wells!
  • The only thing better would have been if the architect had designed a fireman’s pole to the coffeehouse
  • When do you feel like a failure as a parent – when you react to your kids instead of act and create the vision
  • I refuse to sacrifice my family on the alter of ministry
  • I am fasting yelling for Lent
  • Physical, intellectual, spiritual challenges for his son!
  • I am going to play offense with my family
  • You’ve made a few more trips around the sun than I have had – nice way of saying your old
  • I’m grateful that I have a heavenly that tag-teams with me as an earthly father
  • Are you playing offense spiritually?
  • How many would say, I’m just being honest I prayed too much last year, I read the Bible too much last year
  • Dream God sized dreams for one reason – they force you to stay on your knees with Him.
  • Pray ridiculous prayers!
  • Coffeehouse
  • Matthew 18:18 – is the only explanation of why they have coffeehouse
  • May 26, 2005 most memorable day of my life – Ethiopia  National Park – Game Drive – what an amazing creator God is – that night around a campfire singing worship songs – What if sarah hadn’t faced her fears – the memories, the stories would have gone untold – she was pooped on by a baboon – only bad thing – but it was awesome
  • Don’t accumulate possessions accumulate stories!
  • What were bedtime stories like at Beniah’s time? Hey dad tell us that lion chasing story again!

Del Pueblo, Lost Fanatics, Subway lunch, Funny Name, Thumps at IHOP, and Blazing Noodles

Somethings I’ve wanted to blog but haven’t:

  •  Tonight 16 people went to eat @ Del Pueblo all juniors and seniors and student ministry adult leaders. We were very loud and boisterous and had fun.  When it came to leave the waiter said someone paid our bill for us.  Turns out and older couple (who I think were drunk, but that’s iffy) was so impressed by us praying and pouring into each other, he wanted to buy our meal.  They said they wished they had something like that when they were younger.  I think it really impacted the students, they could see they touched that couples life just being themselves.
  • I went over to the Pollocks house tonight to watch Lost.  I gotta tell you I was really impressed by their dedication and knowledge of the show.  They were pulling quotes/names/theories out that I hadn’t thought about or had forgotten about.  I love that I’m surrounded by Lost freaks here.  Just goes to show you that God really does bless you with more when he takes something away.
  • Had lunch at Subway a while back with Jordan and Erika.  Joe you would be proud to know that I am spreading your earth friendly idea of compacting all Subway trash into one chip bag.  We had the subway sandwich artist take a picture of us holding up the bag of chips, when I get it from Jordan I’ll post it.  (this might be one of those you had to be there moments) Also we had a funny moment where Erika saw neon signs at a furniture store that said Dining, Open, Sofa, and Pedro. Erika was like why Pedro – turns out it was Bedroom.
  • Erika was telling of a teacher’s name achey pronounced aki and a student one day said you should have a child named Terry (teriyaki).
  • We went to IHOP after Truth on Wednesday and Brandon and I played thumps.  It’s the first time I haven’t won. We called a truce after a long duel.
  • A group of use went to Pei Wei Tuesday and Michael hit Andy on the back of the neck with a chopstick. Andy waited a few moments and the retaliated by picking up a noodle with his chopsticks and slinging it at Michael.  Well it was hilarious because not only did it slap him pretty good (imagine towel flick effect) but it was also called “blazing noodles” and it just happened to hit Michael in the eye.  So for the next 20 minutes Michael’s eye was on fire.  It wasn’t until we were almost done that the phrase came out, “I’m sorry I hit you with a blazing noodle!”  Priceless quote!

Going to Virginia

I’m leaving Saturday morning @ 6 am on a plane from Houston and I will be @ Tri-cities Airport (TRI) @ 3 pm.

Hope to see some of you while I am in! We will be leaving Monday morningish for the 2 day 16 hour trek to Houston.

fun with a fortune cookie

Something you may or may not know about me is I love Chinese food!

Something I like to do with fortune cookies is add “in bed” to the end of the fortune cookie’s message.

I got this fortune cookie that said this the other day and it cracked me up.  Thought I should share.

You are in the vicinity of a good time.  Get the shy to join in.”

Add in bed to the end of it. Hope it brightened your day!

I have a criminal record

Ok… today was a great day. Here’s what happened in order.

  1. I slept in till about 11
  2. I went online and searched for apartments – everything was coming up 1200 or more for a 3 bedroom
  3. I got discouraged
  4. Found out about the place Mychal John and Meagan were moving to.
  5. Called and found out they had great prices, made an appointment
  6. Stopped by Truth building and then bank to deposit my paycheck. (don’t have direct deposit yet b/c I don’t have checks yet)
  7. Went to appointment at Village in the Woods – was very interested – told them I’d be back, they warned me they could run out of places to rent
  8. Went to another place – too much and wouldn’t let a family of 5 rent a two bedroom
  9. Came back to Village in the Woods – the one I wanted closer to pool and Mychal John got taken while I was gone – along with two others.   Thankfully they still had two left one of which I really liked.  I did the approval (found out I have a criminal record – see below) Going to sign lease tomorrow and will move in next weekend. Two bedroom for 590 a month! Yeah Baby! 2 Pools, playgrounds, picnic areas, fitness center.
  10. Went to McDonald’s and got Beowulf from a Redbox
  11. Came home and started watching it
  12. Jordan called and offered to help me reset the stage for tomorrow
  13. Got there and an event was going on so we couldn’t do it
  14. Went to CiCi’s Pizza
  15. Went to Pump It Up – where it was teen night and I felt a little out of place. But I made the most of it and had fun – I’m sure I’ll be sore tomorrow.
  16. Went back to Truth center to reset stage
  17. Came home and it is 12:00 am

I gotta be at the church @ 8 for the Jr High band is playing for the Route 56(5th &6th grade) event.

So first off – I’m so excited because the church is really taking care of me. I know they want my family down here and they are willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen.  And they are making it happen. I will probably go get my family next weekend.

Second. When doing my background check today they asked me why I had a misdemeanor charge of possesion. I was like what!? Your kidding!? When? Basically when I was 17 I got caught with beer at a Lolapolooza concert in South Carolina and that is what it was. But it wasn’t until they said North Carolina that I remembered what it was.  I started thinking about all sorts of stuff and when that could have happened. Long story short – I had no idea that was on my record.  I thought when you turned 18 it was like starting over. Apparently not for possession charges. That sounds crazy to say possession charges.

Ok… goodnight to all!

Lost, Vantage Point, Private Kicking, and a Funeral

Ok… today was a fun day.

  • I just got done watching Lost episode 5 of Season 4 – “The Constant”. Holy Cow! Lost is so creative and imaginitive and insane – it’s just crazy.  I am so proud to be a Lost fan! 🙂 What would your constant be?
  • I watched Vantage Point tonight with Everett. It was a REALLY GOOD (not great) movie.  It is definitely worth watching. I actually caught myself biting my knuckles at one point (not just because I had to go to the bathroom badly).  I had really high expectations of this movie because it looked so awesome from the preview. But if I went into that movie with a “tabula rosa” (clean slate) mind and had never seen the previews, I would walk away happy.
  • Private Kicking – So I watched the Truth building today – meaning from 3-6 we have kids there hanging out and I’m responsible. Well at closing time I walk outside and see a kid laying on the ground and another kid sees me and starts walking away (at a hurried pace).  I go to the kid and I can see a tear in his eye and I ask him if he is ok. He doesn’t move. So I’m like, “uh-oh.”  Long story short he finally started talking. Turns out he and his friend were trying to kick each other where it hurts and apparently the other kid won. Oh the stupid games we boys play.  There’s more to this story but I don’t want to say it on here because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.
  • I went to my first student ministry related funeral today. Nick’s (drummer in band) grandfather passed away this week and the service was today. I feel so privileged that God has called me to minister to students. I hope I am way over communicating to them that I care and that they can come to me about anything.

It’s time for bed. Tomorrow I am going to search desperately for a place to rent for my family and I. The church is going to help my family and I out so they don’t have to wait until the house sells to move here.  So the ball is in my court. I have to find us a place to live temporarily and then I can go get my family. Kinda reminds me of “I have gone to prepare a place for you and now I am going to go get my bride.”  It has officially been a month now since I have seen my wife and kids. I miss them terribly.
